Meeting Moms Where They Are: The Guthrie Maternity Oasis Mobile Unit Brings Care On the Road

In rural New York, access to prenatal and postpartum care can be a challenge, dependent on geography, transportation, and limited availability. But what if care didn’t wait for patients to seek it out? What if it came directly to them?

That’s exactly the mission of the Guthrie Maternity Oasis Mobile (MOM) Unit. This 39-foot mobile health clinic travels throughout the Southern Tier and Central New York, pulling into neighborhoods, parking lots, churches, and fire stations to bring essential maternity and women’s health services right where they’re needed most.

More than just a doctor’s office on wheels, the MOM Unit is a welcoming, judgment-free space staffed by experienced midwives, lactation consultants, dietitians, social worker ( who is also a certified trauma therapist) and other support personnel who understand what it means to meet people where they are, both physically and emotionally. And it’s already making a meaningful difference in the communities it serves.

Care That Moves—Literally

While the MOM Unit was parked outside the YWCA in Elmira on June 19th, it quickly became clear this is far from a stationary service. The MOM Unit travels across the region each week to bring critical maternity and women’s health services to communities that need them most.

From rural fire departments in Tyrone to local libraries in Dryden and churches in Hector, the unit is part of a broader mission: make care accessible, approachable, and community-rooted.

The MOM Unit has already traveled to several communities across the region and continues to visit new locations regularly. Some of the places it has recently served or will be visiting soon include:

  • Tioga County Health Department, Owego, NY
  • Tyrone Fire Department, Tyrone, NY
  • Hector Presbyterian Church, Hector, NY
  • Renewal Ranch, Owego, NY
  • Southworth Library, Dryden, NY
  • YWCA Elmira, Elmira, NY
  • Grace Lee Memorial Church, Beaver Dams, NY
  • Livingston County Health Department, Mt. Morris, NY
  • Pulteney Free Library, Pulteney, NY
  • Inspire Community Center, Spencer, NY

Walk-ins are always welcome. But if you prefer to plan ahead, appointments can be scheduled by calling 866-GUTHRIE (866-488-4743).

Built From Experience and Compassion

During a recent visit to the MOM Unit, conversations with one of the midwives and the CEO of YWCA Elmira shed light on the impact of the program. The midwife, who previously worked as a labor and delivery nurse, explained that she discovered the position online and was immediately drawn to the mission. She described the work as “one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done,” adding that mobile health care had always been a personal goal.

The CEO of YWCA Elmira echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how the mobile unit serves as a vital bridge between underserved families and health services they might not have otherwise accessed. “Families literally walk down the street and stop to come inside,” the CEO noted. “That kind of exposure is huge, and it takes time to build. But once people experience it, they understand. This is about connection and community.”

What Services Are Offered?

What struck me most during my time there was just how comprehensive the care is. It’s not just checkups and pregnancy tests (though those are offered too). The MOM Unit offers:

  • Prenatal and postpartum care
  • Limited pregnancy ultrasounds
  • Nutrition and diabetic counseling
  • Lactation support and latch assessments
  • Mental health screenings
  • Pelvic exams, STD testing, and gynecological services
  • Annual wellness visits and more

They’re even working to bring lab draws right to the van, eliminating the need to send patients elsewhere for tests. It’s care designed with real-life barriers in mind: transportation, time, stigma, and affordability.

Community-Centered Care Making a Difference

The MOM Unit is deeply rooted in collaboration and a strong commitment to serving the community by filling critical gaps in care and reaching individuals who might otherwise fall through the cracks. The focus is on providing care that is respectful, professional, and culturally sensitive, truly showing up for the community in a meaningful and accessible way.

Backed by a three-year grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, the MOM Unit is part of a larger initiative aimed at reducing maternal health disparities in rural New York. Even in its early stages, the program is making a measurable impact, boosting early prenatal visits, improving continuity of care, and earning the trust of the communities it serves.

The dedicated team averages can take about ten patients a day, balancing visits to hospitals, clinics, community centers, libraries, and so much more. Throughout their work, they emphasize hands-on education and personalized attention, elements often missing in traditional healthcare settings, ensuring that every woman receives the care and support she deserves.

The Road Ahead

The MOM Unit is more than a van. It’s a movement. A rethinking of how healthcare can, and should, work for everyone, no matter their location or income.

So, whether you’re a college student, a first-time mom, or someone just looking to take control of your reproductive health, the doors of the MOM Unit are open. Literally.

Come on in. Ask questions. Get the support you need. Because when care comes to you, it’s not just about convenience, it’s about dignity, equity, and community.
